Department of State Police - RG 226 | Illinois State Archives

Name: Department of State Police - RG 226
Variant Name: Department of Law Enforcement; Department of Public Safety

Historical Note:

The Department of Public Safety was created by the General Assembly in 1941. The Department of Public Welfare transferred the Illinois State Penitentiary, Illinois Security Hospital, Illinois State Farm, Board of Pardons, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to it. The Department of Public Works and Buildings gave over the State Highway Police and the Department of Insurance forfeited the office of the State Fire Marshal (L. 1941, pp. 1216-1223).

The Department of Public Safety became the Department of Law Enforcement beginning in 1970 and it further was charged with gathering and disseminating data concerning criminal activity and with maintaining electronic records on criminal identities (P.A. 76-444, pp. 1037-1038). Also in 1970 a separate Department of Corrections with a Parole and Pardon Board division was established (See RG 243.000 and RG 403.000). The Governor’s Executive Order No. 3 (March 29, 1985) changed the name of the Department of Law Enforcement to the Department of State Police.
