Historical Note: The Everett McKinley Dirksen Memorial Commission was created by the General Assembly in 1970 to make a study of the possibility of securing suitable sites for the erection of memorial statues, one in Washington, D.C., and the other at the Capitol in Springfield, and make recommendations for the type of statues and inscriptions. It was composed of three members of the House and three members of the Senate appointed respectively by the Speaker and the president pro tempore, the Governor, Secretary of State, director of the Department of General Services, and the United States Architect of the Capitol (P.A. 76-2554, p. 1065).
