Historical Note:

The Department of Employment Security was created by the Governor’s executive order which was issued on March 30, 1984 and which took effect on July 1 of that year (Executive Order No. 84-2, P.A. 83-1503).The new department assumed responsibilities exercised by the former Bureau of Employment Security of the Illinois Department of Labor.

The department administers the state’s unemployment insurance, employment service, job training, and labor market information programs. It prepares for public distribution statistical details and information pertaining to the state’s manufacturing, commerce, labor, and employment conditions; promotes the material, social, intellectual, and moral prosperity of workers and wage earners; maintains an online job search engine to match job seekers to prospective employers; operate a system of local public employment offices and “Illinois Employment and Training Centers”; exchanges with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services information necessary for the enforcement of child support orders; and prepares reports for the Governor and the General Assembly regarding the progress of the “Illinois Employment and Training Centers” in serving job seekers with disabilities [20 ILCS 1005/(2007)].
