Historical Note: The State Council on Nutrition was created by the General Assembly in 1977. It was charged with studying issues related to providing all Illinois citizens proper nutritional diets. Specifically it was to develop legislation to ensure primary and secondary school instruction in nutrition, a coordination of federal feeding programs for children and the elderly, the determination of nutritional deficiency causation in relation to those feeding programs and the correction of the same, the compilation of data on the nutritional status of all Illinois citizens, and nutrition education for expectant and new mothers. The council was composed of four House members and four Senate members divided equally by party affiliation; four interested public members appointed by the General Assembly's leadership; five interested public members appointed by the Governor; two members appointed by each of the directors of the Departments of Public Health, Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Aging, Children and Family Services, and Public Aid; and two members appointed by the Office of the Superintendent of Education. It was to report annually to the General Assembly (P.A. 80-736, pp. 2206-2208). The council was abolished by the Legislative Commission Reorganization Act of 1984 (P.A. 83-1257, p. 1176).
