Historical Note: The Ethnic Heritage Commission was created in 1979 with responsibility for designating a ten day period in each year as the Heritage Festival and for assisting local communities in preparing and presenting appropriate cultural activities in their respective locales. It was composed of two House members and two public members appointed by the Speaker, two House members and two public members appointed by the House minority leader, two Senate members and two public members appointed by the president pro tempore, and two Senate members and two public members appointed by the Senate minority leader. It was to report annually on its activities to the General Assembly (P.A. 81-1176, pp. 4498-4499). The commission was abolished by the Legislative Commission Reorganization Act of 1984 (P.A. 83-1257, p. 1174).
