Historical Note: The Township Government Problems Commission was created in 1957 and was made up of three members of the House, three members of the Senate, and five persons appointed by the Governor. It was charged with studying the organization of townships; the duties, powers, functions, compensation, and fees of township officials; the tax rates and revenues of townships; the possibility of combining townships for the purpose of improving local government; and generally all factors essential to improving and strengthening township government. It reported its findings to the General Assembly in 1959 at which time it expired (L. 1957, p. 1271).
