Administrative/Biographical History
Northwestern Land District Office
The Northwestern Land District Office was created at Galena by an act of Congress of June 26, 1834. The district was composed of land which formerly had been part of the Quincy District lying north of the line separating townships twelve and thirteen north of the baseline for the fourth principal meridian, as well as a small part of the Danville District. On November 2, 1840 the district office was moved from Galena to Dixon.
The Northwestern Land District Office was discontinued on September 3, 1855 and responsibility for selling all remaining public land in the district was transferred to the Springfield Land District Office.
