Administrative/Biographical History
Palestine Land District Office
The Palestine Land District Office was created by an act of Congress of May 11, 1820. It assumed responsibility for part of the land north of the baseline for the second and third principal meridians which formerly was attached to the Shawneetown District. Some of the land in the new district had also been part of the Vincennes (Indiana) District before the boundaries for the State of Illinois were established. In 1831 all land in the Palestine District north of the line separating townships sixteen and seventeen north of the baseline was transferred to the newly created Danville District.
The Palestine Land District Office was discontinued on August 14, 1855 and responsibility for selling all remaining public land in the district was transferred to the Springfield Land District Office.
