Administrative/Biographical History
Edwardsville Land District Office
The Edwardsville Land District Office was created by an act of Congress of April 29, 1816. It originally was assigned all land north of the baseline for the third principal meridian which had formerly been part of the Kaskaskia District. In 1822 the newly created land office at Springfield assumed jurisdiction over all land north of the line separating townships thirteen and fourteen north of the baseline. By an act of Congress of March 2, 1833 additional land was transferred from Edwardsville to the Quincy and Vandalia Districts.
The Edwardsville Land District Office was discontinued on August 8, 1855 and responsibility for selling all remaining public land in the district was transferred to the Springfield Land District Office.
